Saskatoon Pilates Teacher Training and Certification
- with Marta Hernandez & Tanis Lee
Marta Hernandez is founder of The Space since 2000, formerly known as Yaletown Pilates. Her involvement in dance from a young age has given her a natural ability to work with the body through movement. She received her BFA in Dance from York University in Toronto in 1994 and completed her Pilates certification through The Physicalmind Institute in New York in 1999. In 2004, Marta was selected by the Physicalmind Institute to be a Certified Pilates Teacher Training Studio and in 2008 she became head of the Physicalmind Institute for Canada, where she certifies senior teachers to become certifying studios. She became a certified Level 1 GYROTONIC® teacher in 2004 and in 2008 a certified GYROKINESIS® teacher through the inventor, Julio Horvath. Marta is now working towards becoming a certified Qi Gong teacher in the Universal Healing Tao System, founded by the Taoist Master Mantak Chia.
Tanis Lee was first introduced to Pilates in 2003. Having been heavily involved in sports, a competitive gymnast, and a gymnastics coach, she was intrigued by the approach Pilates took to exercise. By providing a deeper understanding to the mind body connection, Tanis continued to develop her own practice. This led her to embark on becoming an instructor. She obtained her certification in both mat and equipment Pilates with Marta Hernandez and the PhysicalMind Institute, and has been working with Marta since 2006. In 2008, Tanis also became a certified Teacher Trainer with Physicalmind Canada, and a GYROTONIC ® instructor. Tanis is both passionate about teaching movement and enthusiastic to share her knowledge for these various modalities to all walks of life.
Mat Initiation 101 - Fundamentals
This course is the first step to becoming a certified Pilates Instructor. The PhysicalMind Institute approaches Pilates not just as a fitness regime, but also as a reeducation of the body through movement. Pilates is a preventative system that focuses on core strength, flexibility, and proper alignment. This 3-day course prepares students for both Mat and Reformer Training Programs. Students will learn, practice, and teach, 17 of the 28 Matwork Fundamentals and 35 Classic Mat Exercises. They will develop a deeper integration of the repertoire into their own body, resulting in a more effective ability to teach.
Students will gain a deepened understanding of:
- The internal core muscles that form a cylinder of support around the spine.
- Breathing: How it relates to internal abdominals and movement.
- Correct body mechanics and postural alignment: Neutral spine and how this aids in efficiency, ease of movement, and injury prevention.
- Fundamentals: A movement language used to cue and help reorganize postural patterns.
- Increases in physical awareness.

Mat Initiation 201
This course is the second course in becoming a Mat teacher. It is also a prerequisite for Concentration 101- Equipment Training. Standing Pilates® adapts many of the classical Pilates mat exercises to take them into the vertical plane. It provides the link between Pilates floor work and everyday functional movement. Aiding in neuromuscular re-patterning of movement habits, Standing Pilates®, moves toward better alignment and efficiency. Students learn how to maintain neutral spine while standing, sitting, walking, bending, or lifting; thus making it a truly functional approach to fitness.
Some of the many benefits of Standing Pilates® are:
- Proprioception enhancement: Balance is required, benefitting the aging population and those suffering from neurological diseases such a Parkinson’s.
- Deep core strengthening: The pelvic floor, transversus abdominus, multifidus and diaphragm form a cylinder of support for the spine, benefitting people with incontinence issues or postnatal mothers.
- Increase in bone density: Standing on one leg is equal to 4 times ones body weight, benefitting those with Osteoporosis.
- More “real estate”: Hips, legs and feet are areas of equal focus.
- More three-dimensionality: Includes the side body and internal spirals.
