Vancouver Pilates Teacher Training and Certification
- with Marta Hernandez

Our Vancouver studio offers pilates mat work courses and equipment certifications for all levels.

The Space Vancouver offers several Training and Certification programs each year in The Method™ Pilates, the original exercises of Joseph Pilates. The Physicalmind Institute has been successfully training Pilates Teachers worldwide since 1991.

Marta HernandezMarta Hernandez is founder of The Space since 2000, formerly known as Yaletown Pilates.  Her involvement in dance from a young age has given her a natural ability to work with the body through movement.  She received her BFA in Dance from York University in Toronto in 1994 and completed her Pilates certification through The Physicalmind Institute in New York in 1999.  In 2004,  Marta was selected by the Physicalmind Institute to be a Certified Pilates Teacher Training Studio and in 2008 she became head of the Physicalmind Institute for Canada, where she certifies senior teachers to become certifying studios.  She became a certified Level 1 GYROTONIC® teacher in 2004 and in 2008 a certified GYROKINESIS® teacher through the inventor, Julio Horvath.  Marta is now working towards becoming a certified Qi Gong teacher in the Universal Healing Tao System, founded by the Taoist Master Mantak Chia.

Suzanne HepburnSuzanne Hepburn received her Pilates certification through the Phyiscalmind Institute, in both Mat and Equipment work, and has been teaching and working with Marta Hernandez since 2003. Having been a dancer from a young age, Suzanne found that pilates was a natural evolution in her work with the body. In 2008 she became a certified Physicalmind Teacher Trainer, and has since trained teachers in Vancouver and the Yukon. Suzanne is also an acting instructor, and finds that her training and skills in that arena only serve to improve her abilities as a Pilates Instructor and Teacher Trainer. She thoroughly enjoys teaching, and is thrilled to pass on her knowledge of pilates and the body to clients and teachers in training.

Meghan ArisMeghan Aris is certified in pilates mat, pilates apparatus and several disciplines of yoga. She has been teaching full time at the Space Vancouver since 2006 and is now a certifying teacher trainer with Physicalmind Canada. Meghan comes from a background in Creative Writing and has worked closely with Marta Hernandez on further developments of Physicalmind course material. At a young age she began her journey into body movement through dance. After being diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis Meghan shifted her practice to more rehabilitative yoga. This eventually led her to the path of Pilates and principles of proper body alignment. Through these disciplines she has helped heal her body and now hopes to give out that knowledge which has shifted her life.

Pilates focuses on postural alignment, and requires coordination, balance, grace and agility. Joseph Pilates termed his system of exercise Contrology, highlighting the control needed to perform the movements. At PhysicalMind, we continue to build on his original insights to create an organic and intelligent workout.

Students enrolled The Method® Pilates undertake a number of steps to receive certification:

yukon pilates training studioInitiation 101 – Fundamentals of Mat Work (21 hours)

Testimonial: I attended the Intro 101 this weekend with Marta and Suzanne, and I loved every minute of it! The instruction was amazing, I learned so much - I'm absolutely still processing! - and I feel that I am really now beginning to build a great foundation for my own practice. The experience was just so positive!  I'm so looking forward to coming to 201!
Thanks Marta and Suzanne for sharing your knowledge in such a gracious, energetic, inspirational way!

Initiation 201 – Advanced Standing Pilates® Mat (3-day course/21 hours))

Initiation 201- Standing Pilates®, is the second course in becoming a Mat teacher. It is also a prerequisite for Concentration 101- Equipment Training. Standing Pilates® adapts many of the classical Pilates mat exercises to take them into the vertical plane.  It provides the link between Pilates floor work and everyday functional movement.  Aiding in neuromuscular re-patterning of movement habits, Standing Pilates®, moves toward better alignment and efficiency. Students learn how to maintain neutral spine while standing, sitting, walking, bending, or lifting; thus making it a truly functional approach to fitness.

Some of the many benefits of Standing Pilates® are:

  • Proprioception enhancement: Balance is required, benefitting the aging population and those suffering from neurological diseases such a Parkinson’s.
  • Deep core strengthening: The pelvic floor, transversus abdominus, multifidus and diaphragm form a cylinder of support for the spine, benefitting people with incontinence issues or postnatal mothers.
  • Increase in bone density: Standing on one leg is equal to 4 times ones body weight, benefitting those with Osteoporosis.
  • More “real estate”: Hips, legs and feet are areas of equal focus.
  • More three-dimensionality: Includes the side body and internal spirals.
This technique is truly an evolution of Pilates, as deeper connections are required to perform these new, complex, standing exercises.

Experience the 10 new Advanced Fundamentals. Finish with 25 of the Classic mat exercises reconfigured to Standing Pilates®. After successful completion of Initiation 101 & Initiation 201, you will be certified to teach mat Pilates.  This course can be applied to BCRPA, AFCLA and APRA continuing education hours.
